The Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry (UGANC), in collaboration with the City of Sciences and Innovation of Guinea, launched its Scientific Days this Tuesday, May 12, 2026, around the theme: “Science, innovation and sustainable development: academic responses to health, environmental and societal challenges in Guinea”.
Researchers, teachers, students and partners were present for this major meeting dedicated to the promotion of scientific research.
An exchange framework to meet the country’s challenges
Representing the rector of UGANC, the vice-rector in charge of research underlined the importance of these days as a space for collective reflection. “These days constitute a privileged framework for exchanges, reflections and sharing around the major issues of our time,” declares Professor Mariama Béavogui. According to the vice-rector, academic research must today mobilize in the face of health, environmental and social challenges. “We affirm our commitment to promoting research that is useful, innovative and geared towards the real needs of our society,” she adds.
Four scientific axes at the heart of the debates
The work focuses on four major themes: health and biomedical sciences, artificial intelligence and modeling, energy and climate sciences, as well as governance and valorization of research. The vice-rector insisted on the interdisciplinary approach, particularly through the One Health concept. “Research is increasingly emphasizing the interdependence between human, animal and environmental health,” says Professor Béavogui.
Around 150 scientific communications expected
Addressing the objectives of the Scientific Days, Professor Abdoulaye Touré, Director General of CERFIG, recalled the strategic importance of science for development. “These scientific days are not just a succession of conferences, but a real space for reflection, exchange and collective construction of knowledge,” he says. He specified that nearly 150 scientific communications, oral and displayed, will be presented by researchers from Guinea and abroad. “Science appears more than ever as a strategic lever for social and economic transformation,” continues Professor Touré. For him, strengthening links between research, public institutions and the private sector remains essential. “This synergy is essential to transform research results into concrete solutions serving populations,” he concludes.
The government reaffirms its commitment
On behalf of the Minister of Higher Education, Chief of Staff Prof. Fanta Touré officially launched the event. She underlined the consistency of the theme with national priorities: “Today, more than ever, Guinea needs strong research, oriented towards concrete solutions. » She reaffirmed the State's commitment to supporting research and innovation. “The government reaffirms its commitment to supporting the training of teacher-researchers, the financing of research and the promotion of local innovations,” adds Professor Fanta Touré. Before concluding by officially declaring the Scientific Days open: “I hope that these days will allow concrete, applicable solutions adapted to the realities of our country to emerge. »
High expectations from participants
These days are also intended to be a source of inspiration for young researchers and students, many of whom present their work. Several participants expressed their expectation of lasting collaborations and concrete solutions resulting from scientific exchanges. For Dr Chérif Lamine Togba, participant, these scientific days constitute a framework for promoting research and contribute to the influence of the country. Work continues until May 14, 2026 at UGANC.
