Public health: AMMnet Guinea relies on data intelligence and modeling to eradicate malaria

AMMnet Guinea -Applied Malaria Modeling Network in partnership with the CERFIG, aims to take a technological step forward in the fight against malaria in Guinea. A training workshop dedicated to capacity building in mathematical modeling opened Monday August 24, 2026 at the Guinea Infectiology Research and Training Center.
Stated objective: break with the uniform distribution of resources and adopt a precision strategy, guided by local epidemiological data.
A health challenge
Malaria remains the number one public health challenge in Guinea, disproportionately affecting pregnant women and children under five. However, the transmission of the disease is not the same in N’Zérékoré, in Labé or on the coast in Lower Guinea. It is to respond to this heterogeneity that AMMnet Guinea deploys the weapon of modeling for five days while banking on data intelligence to eradicate malaria. This face-to-face phase brings together 30 participants focused on the notions of spatial modeling and mathematical modeling of infectious diseases.
This workshop aims to mark a turning point. It prepares us to no longer simply notice cases of malaria after the fact. He wants to predict the dynamics of the disease and adapt responses in real time. “Mathematical modeling is one of the strategies we currently use to be able to convert data into making decisions. How do we go about being as optimal as possible in the decisions we make? Let’s say usually, we used data to be able to make decisions”, explains Professor Alioune Camara, director of the master's degree in public health and the principal investigator of the Wamcad project on the sidelines of the opening of the session.
“Today, thanks to mathematical modeling, we have the capacity to take several data of different types: on health, epidemiology, on the climate, to be able to help in better decision-making for the benefit of better health of the Guinean population. This is what we are promoting through this workshop”, adds Professor Alioune Camara.
Initiate health professionals
An innovative approach which will bring together a set of actors for more concrete results to overcome malaria in Guinea. “The objective of this training session is also to bring together mathematicians, pharmacists and doctors who, each in their own skills, can help promote mathematical modeling of malaria. So that we can make decisions for the health of the population based on the realities on the ground. And to produce results that can help the authorities to better deal with epidemics, to better deal with diseases and to control and even eradicate malaria in our country”, declares Doctor Seydouba Cherif Camara, president of the AMMnet Guinea Network.
This training necessarily meets the need of health professionals to apply the skills acquired in daily work. For Adama Diallo, participant in this workshop, mathematical modeling is useful in the prevention of malaria.
“Modelling interests me a lot, because it is very important, it allows us to make decisions that will allow us to act in the right direction,” she insists.
Stop malaria
Science and data are now combined with field medicine. For AMMnet Guinea, the trajectory towards the elimination of malaria is no longer a simple ambition, it is an equation in the process of being resolved.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria causes 2024 approximately 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths in the world. The African Region alone accounted for 95% of cases and deaths, with 265 million cases and 579,000 deaths, and children under the age of five remain the hardest hit, accounting for nearly 75% of deaths linked to the disease in the African region.
