Women on the island of Kassa have suffered harm due to the pandemic. If on the health level, they were not affected, the economic side – fishing which is none other than the main activity of the locality – was seriously shaken. To do this, Matou Camara, president of the women of the island of Kassa, testifies at Universciences.
It’s the worst kept secret in Kassa: the coronavirus has taken a heavy toll on women active in fishing. Since the start of the pandemic, these women have had to adapt their daily lives both professionally and personally. Thus, the health crisis has called into question the main activity of this locality.
“With this period of coronavirus, it really shook us in our main activity which is fishing,” said Matou Camara, president of women on the island of Kassa.
Stopping activities
The temporary cessation of activities has certainly caused losses and life has become complicated for these women who have nothing else to do.
“We experienced great difficulty in living. Everyone was scared. Everyone was at home, so the fishing business was no longer working. affirms the president of women.
Awareness meetings organized
However, in this situation which prevailed with damage in this area, under the aegis of the authority of women, according to Matou Camara, meetings were organized, to bring the message of protection to the inhabitants: “We held meetings with the entire population, especially women, on the need to protect themselves against this virus. Namely, respecting barrier gestures and everyone was ready for that.”
Despite everything, these women are redoubling their efforts
Although the pandemic is still not over, the women of Kassa are reinventing themselves little by little to continue this activity which is the only one to generate income for them, which covers their primary needs and that of their family.
